We’re in the midst of the second week into the Review Conference of the Non-Proliferation Treaty,  debates are progressing and so is our work. The mood is sensibly good this year, in the corridors of the UN-HQ temporary building (where the conference is being held due to renovations taking place) as well as within the team, not only when the canteen in the first floor turns on animating salsa-tunes during afternoons.

The last days we were able to shoot a great number of new interviews, talking to inspiring people, trying to cover a broad range of perspectives on different issues related to nuclear disarmament and the abolition of nuclear weapons.

We talked about the US’ role within the this year’s conference and regarding efforts on nuclear disarmament in general as well as about the possibilities arising from NGOs’ participation in the RevCon with David Krieger, the president of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation.

Together with Jean du Preez, the head of external relations at the CTBT-Organization (Comprehensive Test-ban-Treaty Organization)we took a closer look on the CTB-Treaty as one major step towards disarmament, on what a comprehensive test-ban would mean and which opportunities and challenges lie in a possible future ratification of this treaty.

We recorded the very moment when Bill Kidd, a member of the Scottish Parliament, delivered the Scottish First Minister’s letter to the Conference Chair Ambassador Cabactulan of the Philippines, expressing his support for efforts on a Nuclear Weapons Convention. Later Mister Kidd told us about the Scottish position on nuclear weapons and the special challenges it faces putting itself forward in international negotiations due to its lack of sovereignty.

Finally we had a memorable conversation with Jonathan Frerichs of the World Council of Churches, offering a more general and humanitarian point of view on roots, driving forces and solutions for nuclear conflict with special regards to the tense situation in the Middle East.
